TENT. GEWOON HARD KNALLEN
/////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
Anamorphous installation commissioned by TENT. Rotterdam 2009
Postcard & Businesscard.
GEWOON HARD KNALLEN / JUST PLAY HARD GEWOON HARD KNALLEN / JUST PLAY HARD is a provocative reference to the vision of one of Rotterdam’s former leading design studios. While 'hard work' was the designer’s maxim in the nineteen eighties, for this generation it’s about making a noise. ‘Gewoon Hard Knallen’ is an an-amorphous mural; it plays with the laws of perspective and is only fully visible and readable from one set position.
The card consists out of 3 pieces. One largely cut card depicting a photo taken onsite, of the installation itself, and two personalized business cards placed on top of the larger photo card. For this project two similar photo's were taken of the installation. One of the installation itself and one of the installation with the creators of the installation, the designers of Studio Spass residing in it. The two business cards are smaller cut outs of the two individual members of Studio Spass, taken as standing in the installation, with the installation as a background. These smaller cards are then placed over the original installation photo, to create the scene of two graphic designers residing in their work, with a full print background, create by the larger photo card. When the business cards are removed, the photo's of the studio Spass designers is literally taken with you, revealing a bare and designer-less installation photo. Upon 'taking the designers with you' you also receive all necessary contact information you might need, and find it hidden neatly on the back of the business card. In this way Studio Spass not only offers insight into some of their more prominent and personal work and work ethic, though an original and eye catching campaign, but also allows the viewer to become immediately familiar with the designers, their style and way of working.
BLURRR This autumn the Rotterdam exhibition space TENT. celebrates its tenth anniversary and presents the jubilee event BLURRR from 9 September to 15 November 2oo9. TENT. reveals a new cultural practice in which the young artist goes beyond the borders of different disciplines and presents him/herself as homo universalis 2.o.
Ever since the renaissance, artists have adopted the position of jack-of-all-trades and their work involves more fields than just that of visual art. And yet, thanks to the possibilities of the Internet, it seems that multitasking has become the most important basis for the practice of art without being noticed. Artists are simultaneously a performer, singer or designer. They work alternately in collectives, duos and groups. They share their knowledge or work on social network sites such as Facebook, Hyves or MySpace and assign the public an active role in their work. With BLURRR, TENT. poses the question: What consequences does this have for their artistic practice and how will this movement continue further? And how should the exhibition space relate to artists who constantly choose a new form of presentation?
